School Safety
School Safety
Ensuring a secure and welcoming environment is our primary responsibility. Our comprehensive approach to safety integrates emotional well-being with physical security. In full alignment with Wisconsin Act 143, we maintain up-to-date safety plans for every district facility. These strategic blueprints are developed in close coordination with the Board of Education, local law enforcement, and the Wisconsin Office of School Safety to ensure we meet the highest standard of preparedness.
- Our Priority: The physical and emotional safety of our students and staff.
- Our Philosophy: We build safe schools by nurturing a climate of support, community, and respect.
- Our Preparedness: Through regular threat assessments and building security audits, we stay ready. In accordance with Wisconsin state law, our individualized safety plans are updated annually and shared with local police and the Department of Justice.
Safety Plans
Individualized school safety plans supplement our district-wide strategy with site-specific details essential for emergency response. These confidential plans include technical data like cameral locations, floor plans, and localized hazard assessments. Shared only with essential staff and law enforcement, these guides are updated annually to ensure our response teams are always prepared with the most accurate information.
Behavioral Threat Assessment
The Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Team (BTAM) will:
- Identify, Intake & Triage: Screen all reports for immediacy. If there is an active weapon or imminent attack, law enforcement takes the lead immediately.
- Inquiry & Fact-Finding: Gather data from multiple sources: social media, records (disciplinary/criminal), and interviews with the individual, peers, or coworkers.
- Assess & Analyze Risk: Determine if the person makes a threat (expression) vs. poses a threat (intent and capability). Uses tools like the “Pathway to Violence” (Ideation > Planning > Preparation > Implementation).
- Classify Level of Concern: Categorize the threat: Transient (can be resolved easily, like a joke or heat-of-the-moment comment) or Substantive (serious intent/planning).
Standard Response Protocol
Our district uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to respond to safety situations in a clear, consistent, and predictable way. The SRP provides a shared language and specific actions for students, staff, and first responders so that everyone understands what to do during an incident.
By using common terminology such as Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter, we can communicate quickly and reduce confusion during emergencies. Students and staff practice these protocols throughout the year so that responses become familiar and calm, helping protect everyone in our school community.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. The Standard Response Protocol allows us to work closely with local law enforcement and emergency agencies to ensure coordinated, effective action when needed.

Standard Reunification Method
Our district follows the Standard Reunification Method to safely return students to their families after an emergency or major incident. This nationally recognized process provides a structured, organized way to reunite students with authorized adults while prioritizing safety, accountability, and clear communication.
During a reunification, parents and guardians will be directed to a designated location and guided through a check-in process. Students are released only to individuals listed as approved contacts, and identification is required. While the process may take time, these procedures are in place to ensure every student is accounted for and released safely.
We appreciate families’ patience and cooperation during any reunification event. Working together helps us protect students and support families during stressful situations.
